Interesting Letter Handwritten and Signed by Rabbi Chaim Yaakov Bulka Rav of the Bronx who Rescued HaMeiri's Writings - Bronx, 1959 - Fascinating letter - by Rabbi Chaim Yaakov Bulka Rav of the Kahal Adat Yeshurun Community in the Bronx - addressed to the Etz Chaim Yeshiva of Jerusalem - Bronx, 1959. Background: One of the unique characteristics of the Jews of Jerusalem and their connection with the Jewish communities of the Diaspora was the prayers at holy sites and the observance of the Yahrzeit of the donors to the institutions in the city. From all the Jewish communities in the Diaspora, donations were sent to the Jerusalem institutions in exchange for a commitment to uphold various customs during the first year of mourning after one hundred and twenty years, as well as in the following years on the Yahrzeit. Rabbi Chaim Bulka Rav of the Kahal Adat Yeshurun Community in the Bronx. Rabbi Bulka was born in Nuremberg. He was the one who rescued the writing of HaMeiri, which were recently published. His father, Rabbi Yitzchak Bulka, copied the manuscript that was owned by the Nuremberg Library and then travelled to Poland to print it. Unfortunately, WWII broke out and Rabbi Yitchak perished. After the Holocaust, the Bureau for the Return of Books Stolen by the Nazis contacted Rabbi Yaakov Bulka, informing him that they had a book with his father's signature. To Rabbi Bulka's amazement, it was the manuscript of Sefer HaMeiri that his father had devotedly copied before the Holocaust.
