Letter Handwritten and Signed by the Gaon Rabbi Yisrael Porat Av Beit Din of Cleveland and Author of Mevoh HaTalmud - Cleveland, 1960 - Touching letter by the Gaon Rabbi Yisrael Porat, author of Mevoh HaTalmud and one of the leading disciples of Maran HaRav Kook – addressed to Rabbi Nissan Tukachinsky, the Rosh Yeshiva of Etz Chaim – Cleveland, 1960. At the beginning of the letter, donations to the yeshiva are discussed, Rabbi Porat being its Gabai in his area of residence. Rabbi Porat ends his letter expressing his longing and yearning for Zion, which he left when he moved to the USA: ”והנני ברגשי געגועים לציון ומקראיה, אחד הנולד בה והמצפה לראותה ולהשתתף בבנינה...”. The Gaon Rabbi Yisrael Porat (1886-1974) was a Talmid Chacham who was born in Jerusalem and was one of the leading disciples of Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Hacohen Kook. Rabbi Porat was the only Ashkenazic Rav ever who was offered to serve as Chacham Bashi. He moved to the USA, where he served for fifty years as Rav of Cleveland, Ohio. Author of the monumental work Mevoh HaTalmud. It is interesting to note that although he was a leading disciple of HaRav Kook, he was also an admirer of the Gaon Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, whom he invited to the be the Mohel of his son while HaRav Kook served as the Sandak.
