A Treasure! Lengthy and Sharp Letter Handwritten and Signed by the Gaon Rabbi Menachem Mendel Krengel - against Sefer Tikkun Eiruvin by the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Aryeh Leibush Horowitz Author of Shut Chayei Aryeh - Krakow, 1892 - ומעתה יהי' עירנו קראקא כרכ”א דקול”א בי' ילקוט הקילות מכל הקהילות - Lengthy and rare polemic letter - written in fine Rashi script - by the famed Gaon Rabbi Menachem Mendel Krengel of Krakow - addressed to the famed Gaon Rabbi Yaakov Bechor Elyashar Av Beit Din of Hebron - Krakow, 1892.  Background: one of the majors controversies in Galicia was the dispute in Krakow reagrding the Eiruv of the city. In ca. 1880, the Eiruv poles were removed by the authorities in Krakow. The Gaon Rabbi Chaim Aryeh Leibush Horowitz Author of Shut Chayei Aryeh published a Kuntres titled Tikkun Eiruvin in which he permitted Tiltul in the town by combining several opinions about the railway and the river crossing the town, even without the Eiruv poles that were removed. In his book Torat Euruvin, the Gaon Rabbi Menachem Mendel Krengel vehemently objected to the Chayei Aryeh's Heiter and was supported by the Admor the Divrei Yechezkel of Shinova and the Maharsham of Brezhan.  This lengthy letter was written in Rashi script to Rabbi Yaakov Elyashar Av Beit Din of Hebron. In his letter, Rabbi Krengel sharply describes the struggle against Reform Jews in his town, the Eiruv story and his major claims against Rabbi Chaim Leibush and his book.  ”אש המחלוקת ללהב יצאה בין היראים הי”ו, ובין כת המתחדשים המכנים א”ע בשם כת הבינונים, ובעו”ה גברה מעשה שטן ונצחו הבינונים את היראים אף שהמה רובא דמנכר.... ולכן אמרו ננתקה את מוסרותימו, ונשליכה ממנו עבותימו המה חוטי העירובין מתיקונא דמתא.... אבל לא בכגון דא ח”ו אשר כל הקולו”ת וקול”א קולו”ת שנדברו ונשאו ונתנו בענין זה עד היום כלם יחדיו יבאו כאן במק”א...”. Double paper, two written pages.  23X29 cm.  Minor professional restorations. Good condition.  The Gaon Rabbi Menachem Mendel Krengel (1847-1930) a leading disciple of the Gaon Rabbi Shimon Sofer. Served as Dayan and Moreh Tzeddek of Krakow and was one of the leaders of its Chassidic community in general and the Sanz community in particular.
