Lot of Six Passover Haggadahs with the Unique Gilt Embossment ”Beit Knesset Hachadasha BiYerushalayim” - Vienna, 1930s - Lot of six Passover Haggadahs published by teh famed publisher Yosef Schlesinger of Vienna - with the unique gilt embossment of the Churva synagogue - Vienna, 1930s. In the early 1840s, the Jews of Jerusalem began to rebuild the famous synagogue The Churva. For this purpose, emissaries were sent to all Jewish communities around the world to raise funds for this sacred cause. The campaign generated interest in the Diaspora, and when the synagogue's construction was completed in the 1864, it became the talk of the day in all Jewish centers in the Diaspora. Historical echoes of this can be found on the covers of books starting from that year. In many cities, an embossment of the Churva Synagogue was stamped on the front binding of books, in a style that varied from city to city, but most clearly reflects the interest generated by the dedication of the Churva Synagogue in those years. Later, this embossment became part of the tradition of bookbinders and was used to decorate special books until the days of the Holocaust. Please refer to Hebrew catalog text for a descriptions of the Haggadahs in this lot. A total of six Haggadahs. Detached bindings. Condiitons vary.
