Spectacular Italian Manuscript with Piyyutim for the Varied Moadim - with Illustrations and the Family Crest - Italy the Early 19th Century - Italian manuscript, with prayers and Piyyutim for the month of Tishrei, accompanied by illustrations and the family crest - Italy the early 19th Century (Verona?).  Fince sript, square letters, of varied Piyyutim for the festivals of Tishrei - the prayer of Achot Ketanat, Piyyutim for Simchat Torah and Seder Hoshanot for Hoshana Rabba. Apparently written for the times when the Bimah is circled and it is difficult to use a large, heavt Machzor.  The manuscript contains fine illustrations at the end of a passage or Piyyut. Appearing at the end of the manuscript is a large family crest with plants on both its sides, a crown at its top and a figure of a lion and star-of-David in its center.  Background: A family crest was common in the 18th and 19th centuries among wealthy families within the Jewish communities of Italy. Many family crests featured the image of a lion, similar to the emblems of well-known printers. Another figure that, for some reason, was also common in Italian Jewish family crests was the rooster—perhaps these families included ritual slaughterers or Mohalim...
