Jerusalem of Lithuania and Its Sages: Handwritten Signature of Maran the Gaon Rabbi Avraham Danzig Author of the Chayei Adam - on Sefer Agur Zholkva, 1798 - Sefer Agur which was studied by Maran the author of the Chayei Adam with his handwritten signature on the title page of the book - the Press of Rabbi Mordechai Rabin Stein - Zholkva, 1798.  Sefer Agur by Rabbeinu Yaakov Landau, one of the sages of Italy of the late Rishonim period. The books deals with the Halachot of the Or Hachaim section and Yoreh Deah, subjects that coincide with the Piskei Halachot introduced in Sefer Chayei Adam by Maran. A halachic Sefer Yesod which is quoted frequently in Hagahot HaRema on Shulchan Aruch and was certainly used daily by Maran the Chayei Adam.  Apeparing on the upper part of the title page of the book is the typical signature of Maran the Chayei Adam: ”אברהם דנציג”. An additional owner's signature: ”דוד יעקב הלוי”. Bound with Sefer Chazon - Pitron Chidot - by Rabbeinu Yaakov Landau the author of the above Sefer Agur.  122; [4] leaves.  Late binding. Some moth, mainly to the margins. Good condition.  Maran the Gaon Rabbi Avraham Dabzig author of the Chayei Adam (1748-1823) a leading disciple of HaGra and the Noda BiYehuda. Despite the pleadings of many communities, Rabbeinu refused to accept a rabbinic position and earned his living as a merchant, as described by him in his exciting foreword to Sefer Chayei Adam: ”והגם שנסעתי למרחקים והייתי סוחר אף חכמתי עמדה לי כי בנסיעתי לדרך דעתי עליה ובישיבתי בחנות דעתי עליה, ותיתי לי שאפילו בשעת משא ומתן פעמים הרבה היה דעתי עליה בהרהור פירוש או קושיא”. Although he had no official position, he was one of the leaders of the Vilna community and nothing was done in the city without his consent and instrcutions. Became famed as the author of his monumental book Chayei Adam  which had numerous editions and was studied all over the Jewish world. Those who studied the book regularly had a special custom: when they finished the book, they would go to the Chayei Adam's grave to pray for success and blessing (Eretz Chefezt, Vilna 1909, p. 44). He was also knowledgeable in Kabbalah and the Passover Haggadah which he published contains Kabbalistic commentary in the foreword and content of the book. He also wrote the famed prayer Tefillah Zaka which is said before the Kol Nidrei on Yom Kippur.
