First Edition of Mikneh Avram - Hebrew Grammar by Rabbi Avraham de Balmes - Bomberg Press Venice, 1523 - Sefer Mikneh Avraham - a Hebrew grammar book - by the physician Rabbi Avraham de Balmes of Padova (Padua) - Dabiel Bomberg Press - Venice, 1523 - first edition. Stefansky Sifrei Yesod p. 247 of the supplements.  Rabbi Aaraham de Balmes, Rav and physician from Padova [Padua]. Taught Jewish students Torah and non-Jewish ones, medicine and philosophy. This book was edited, with a Latin translation, at his request for the non-Jewish workers of the printer Daniel Bomberg, who, naturally, had encountered difficulties when printing Hebrew books.  On verso of the title page there is a Latin poem in honor of the printer Bomber by Francis Rosette followed by a lengthy foreword by Dabiel Bomberg.  Originally, the book had two variants - one with the Hebrew text and the Latin translation on facing pages and the other, with the Hebrew text only. This is the edition with the Latin translation; at some stage, someone went through the book cutting out all the leaves with the Latin translation and leaving only those with the original Hebrew text.  Originally [316] leaves. Approx. 157 leaves are missing from this copy (those woth the Latin translation as stated above).  One leaf before the last is completed with script.  Ancient binding, worn. Stains. Taping to the last leaf. Good condition.
