Extremely Rare! Leaf with 2 Letters! Handwritten and Signed by the Maharil of Yanovitz the Brother and Right-Hand Man of Rabbeinu Admor Hazaken Baal HaTanya Addressed to Rabbi Isaac of Homel - Yanovitz, 1822 - Leaf written on both sides, with a letter on one side and a response on Hilchot Gittin on the other, handwritten and signed by the Gaon Rabbi Yehuda Leib Shneur, author of She'erit Yehuda (the Maharil), the famed brother of Rabbeinu Admor Hazaken Baal HaTanya, his right-hand man and one of the leading Ma'atikei Hashmu'ah - with an additon in one of the letters that was omitted in the printed version - one of the letters was sent to the Gaon Chassid Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Halevi Epstein Av Beit Din of Homel and his Beit Din - Yanovitz, Cheshvan 1822.  ”כך קבלתי מפי קדשו של רבינו הג' אדמו”ר ז”ל נ”ע” [Thus I received from the mouth of Rabbeinu the Admor]  This is a leaf containing two original letters handwritten by the Maharil, from the archival treasures of the renowned Moreh Tzeddek of Lubavitch, Rabbi Yissachar Ber HaLevi Horowitz of Lubavitch, a trusted member of the household and confidante of the Tzemach Tzeddek. Rabbi Yissachar Ber owned many manuscripts by the Maharil of Janovitz and the Tzemach Tzeddek of Lubavitch and many more leading Geonim of Chabad.  The first page contains a letter to Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Halevi Epstein Av Beit Din of Homel and his Beit Din on Shemot Gittin, regarding a woman named Tzira or Tzirel. The response was printed entirely in Shut She'erit Yehida (Brooklyn 2009), Even HaEzer, Siman 55, p. 580.  Beneath the Maharil's response, there are Halachic lists handwritten by the Moreh Tzeddek Rabbi Yissachar Ber Halevi Horowitz of Lubavitch.  On verso of the leaf, there is an additional letter addressed to Rabbi Yehuda leib from Cheshvan 1823. It too deals with Hilchot Gittin. Most of this reponse was printed in She'erit Yehuda, Even haEzer, Siman 9, p. 358. Omitted from the printed version, however, are the date, addressee's name, the name of the husband giving the divorce and a line and half appearing after the signature.  [Possibly, the addressee, Rabbi Yehuda Leib, was also a Dayan of Homel and at the same time, he sent two letters written on the same leaf to two addressees - or possibly this was a draft which he later copied on two separate leaves] This review was written by the famed manuscripts scholar Rabbi Yosef Zvi Leader, who was among the circle of friends of the bibliographer Rabbi Yehoshua Mondshine and is an expert on Chabadic manuscripts. Enclosed is confirmation by one of the leading Chabad scholars in our generation, Rabbi Eliyahu Matusov, a member of the editorial staff of Otzar HaChassidim.  The entire volume from which this leaf was taken was previously sold at the Kedem auction house in 2017, auction 53, lot 60. According to their description in the catalog, the description written for the complete volume is only a ”partial description.  [1] leaf. Approx. 18X16 cm. written on both sides. Minor tears along the edges. On the right, a tear not affecting the text. On the lower left, an open tears apparently not affecting the text.  The Gaon Rabbi Yehuda Leib Shneur - the Maharil of Yanovitz (1749/1750 - early 1926) A distinguished Halachic authority, the brother and disciple of the Admor Hazaken Baak HaTanya. He served as a Moreh Tzeddek  and Maggid Meisharim in the city of Yanovitz. His brother, the Admor Hazaken, appointed him to transcribe his Mamarim and paid him for it. His elder brother relied on his transcriptions more than on any other ”scribes, ” as they were faithful to the original, without additions, subtractions, or interpretations. Based on his writings, the book Torah Or (Kopust, 1837) was printed - the Alter Rebbe's Mamrim on the Chumash Bereshit and Shemot. During the Alter Rebbe's lifetime, his brother, the Maharil, was his right-hand man and confidante. The Maharil was one of the faithful Ma'atikei Shmu'ah of his elder brother's teachings in both Halacha and Chassidut, and he is a source for many matters within his Torah. In his book, She'erit Yehudah, as well as in the responsa of his brother's grandson, the Tzemach Tzeddek, many traditions, Kabbalot, and Shmu'ot concerning Halachic matters that the Maharil received from his brother are cited, including Piskei Halacha that the Alter Rebbe wrote in his youth in the Shulchan Aruch and later retracted in his old age. After his brother's passing, the Maharil dedicated himself to editing and proofreading the Shulchan Aruch HaRav, adorning it with source references, his own glosses, and additions. In 1841, his book She'erit Yehudah on Hilchot Melicha and Shut was printed.
