Extremely Rare! Letter Handwritten and Signed by the Gaon Rabbi David Luria, the Radal - to His Friend the Moreh Tzeddek of Lubavitch - Bichov, Early 19th Century - Letter handwritten and signed by the Gaon Rabbi David Luria (the Radal) to his friend, Rabbi Yissachar Ber Horowitz, the famed Moreh Tzeddek of Lubavitch - Bichov (Bykhov) Yashan, during the years 1927-1933 - extremely rare! This is short letter (incomplete at its beginning) of 6 lines by one of the leading Geonim of Lithuania and Ma'atikei Hashmu'ah of HaGra, who was known for his vast knowledge of the Torah, Bigleh and Nistar, Rabbi David Luria - the Radal. The letter deals with matters of Milei DeAlma. In the letter, Radal asks his friend, Rabbi Yissachar Ber, to sign a receipt for someone passing through his town. Enclosed with the letter is a list of various types of merchandise and their prices.  The letter was apparently written during the years 1927-1933, since in those years, Rabbei Yissachar Ber served as Moreh Tzeddek of Bichov and the address written by the Radal is ”לק' בוחאב חדש יצ”ו”. On verso of the letter, the Radal writes:  ”לכבוד ידידי הרבני המופלג... הוותיק חו”ב י”א [=חריף ובקי ירא אלוקים] כש”ת מוהר”ר ישכר בער הלוי הורוויץ נ”י... מבוחאב ישן יצ”ו”. At the end of the letter, the Radal's signature: ”ידידו דוד לוריא מבוחאב ישן יצ”ו”. [1] leaf. Approx. 20X14 cm. The beginning of the letter is missing/ Restorations and paper-filling. Stains, wear and moth signs slightly affecting the text.  This review was written by the famed manuscripts scholar Rabbi Yosef Zvi Leader, who was among the circle of friends of the bibliographer Rabbi Yehoshua Mondshine and is an expert on Chabadic manuscripts.   The Radal - the Gaon Rabbi David Luria (1798-1856) one of the Geonim and sages of Lithuania who combined Torah and Gedulah. Was also one of the leading Ma'atikei Shemu'ah of HaGra and his Beit Midrash. Had vast knowledge of both Talmudim, Midrashei Chazal, the Zohar and the Ari's writings. Was famed mostly for his his glosses on the Bavli Talmud - which were printed in the Vilna Shas and his many glosses on the Midrashim and especially his well-known work on Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer, with a foreword he wrote indicating his awe-inspiring knowledge of the Torah.  Despite the Radal's deep devotion to the HaGra's teachings and school of thought, he did not refrain from befriending the great Chassidic leaders, with whom he was bound by strong ties of love. This is particularly true regarding the Tzemach Tzeddek and the Chiddushei HaRim, about whom he writes at the beginning of his commentary on Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer: ”נתכבדתי ביקר שהדותא חתימת יד קודש מכ' קדושת אדמו”ר כש”ת מנחם מענדיל שליט”א דק”ק ליובאוויטש, ומכבוד הרב הגאון החסיד מו”ה יצחק מאיר אלטער נ”י דפ”ק ווארשא... ” (See also in ”Tzemach Tzeddek – Maftechot” by Rabbi. This letter, addressed to the Moreh Tzeddek of Lubavitch, also clearly demonstrates the great extent of his friendship and high regard for him.
