Historical Letter Handwritten and Signed by the Maharam Shapiro of Lublin with Plans for Building His Famed Yeshiva in Lublin - Piotrkow, 1924 - ”גדול יהי' כבוד הבית ויתקדש שם שמים על ידו”  Interesting historical letter handwritten and signed by the Gaon Rabbi Meir Shapiro of Lublin, with interesting details about his impressive plans to build the famed Yeshivat Chachmei Lublin.  Rabbeinu's letter is addressed to: ”כבוד ידידי הרב הצדיק הגדול בתורה וביראה וכו' כש”ת [כבוד שם תפארתו] מו”ה ר' שלו' שליט”א האב”ד דקה”י [דקהל יראים] בקעלין יצ”ו” [my honorable friend the Tzaddik Rav...Rabbi Shalom Shlita the Av Beit Din of the Kehal Yere'im of Kelin] -  Rabbi Shalom of Schotz when he was Rav of the Kehal Yere'im communit of Kelin, Germany in the 1920s. They became acquainted, of course, in Schotz, Rabbeinu's birth town.  The letter is from winter 1924 - as indicated by the postmark - six years before the dedication of the yeshiva in 1930! In his letter, Rabbeinu describes his vision for the yeshiva. The letter indicates that the original plan was to build three different buildings for the yeshiva with a matching budget: ”הישיבה הלובלינית הולכת ונבנית, תכנית העבודה מעובד על שלשה בנינים, בנין אחד ערוך בעד הלימודים... בנין שני ערוך בעד התלמידים ללינה... בנין שלישי הוא חדרי האוכל, ומקואות ומקומות הרחצה וכדומה, העת הזאת אנו עומדים באמצע הבנין הראשון ונקוה לגמרו בקרוב - היינו להכניסו תחת הגג ובתחילת הקיץ נגמרנו, כל הבנין הראשון יעלה 58,000 דאלארים, שלשת הבנין 250,000 דולרים [!!!] בערך, גדול יהי' כבוד הבית ויתקדש שם שמים על ידו. ומי יתן וחפץ ה' בידנו יצלח”. Very good overall condition.  Rabbi Meir Shapiro of Lublin (1887–1933) was one of the foremost rabbis and educators of the pre-Holocaust generation. Born in Suczawa (Schotz), he was the son of Rabbi Yaakov Shimshon. A brilliant scholar from a young age, he served as Rav in Galina, Sanok, Piotrkowand eventually in Lublin. In 1930, he founded the renowned Yeshivat Chachmei Lublin, a revolutionary Torah institution known for its rigorous study program, vast library, and its goal of producing outstanding Torah scholars. His most famous innovation—the Daf Yomi —was introduced at the Great Congress of Agudat Yisrael in 1923 and has since become a global tradition of daily Talmud study. He served as president of Agudat Yisrael in Poland and as its representative in the Polish Sejm, advocating for Jewish rights and supporting Torah institutions. Though he passed away at a young age, his impact on Torah learning and Jewish education remains profound and enduring. The Admor Rabbi Shalom Moscowitz of Schotz (1878-1958) a descendant of he Maggid of Zlotshov. He was a Gadol in Nigleh, Nistar, and Halacha. In his youth he received his Semicha from the Maharsham of Berezhan who lauded him. He also authored halachic works. In 1930 he moved to London and became famed as the Admor of Schotz. In his will he guaranteed that mercy would fall upon all who visited his grave and accepted upon himself to become stronger in Mitzvot and lighting candles. He also requested a very modest gravestone without titles or the word “Tzaddik”.
