Served as Rav of Vilkomir and Denenburg (Dvinsk). Author of Shut Zecher Yehuda.  Was known for his Chassidut and Prishut, thus his title ”Batlan”. Corresponded with the Admor the Tzemach Tzeddek, whith whom he studied in their youth. Some even state that he was the Rav of the Tzemach Tzeddek for a period of approx. four months. When the Tzemach Tzeddek founded a Kollel Avreichim in Dvinsk, the Maharil was appointed by him as the haed of the Kollel.
