Touching Letter Handwritten and Signed by the Gaon Rabbi Naftali Wasserman the Son of Maran the Kovetz Shi'urim to Maran the Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Rozovsky - Baranovich, 1938 - ”שדעת הר”מ דמיר... לדחות אחר מפניו” - rare letter by the Gaon Rabbi Naftali Binush Wasserma, the son of Maran the Gaon Rabbi Elchonon Wasserman to Maran the Rosh Yehsiva the Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Rozovsky - about rescuing a yeshiva student from being recruited into the Polish army - Baranovich, 1938.  In his letter, which was sent to Maran the Rosh Yehsiva of Ponevezh the Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Rozovsky, Rabbi Wasserman recalls the story of Yitzchak Bernstein - the future Rosh Kolel Etz Yosef of Jerusalem, who was caught by the army and sentenced to 27 month of hard labor ”and he is sick with a lung disease... and of course, due to the state of his health, such work is a death sentence for him G-d forbid...”.  Rabbi Wasserman asks the Rosh Yeshiva, who had immigrated to Eretz Yisrael two years earlier, to make efforts to obtain a certificate (visa) for him to he could escape the horrors of the Polish army. Rabbeinu praises the young talented student, such that in the eight recenet years, there was no one like him at the Mir Yeshiva: ”שהוא בעל כשרון נפלא שקשה למצא דוגמתו ומחדש עצום ומתמיד גדול, הרב דמיר שליט”א אומר שמכל התלמידים הברנוביצאים שבאו למיר במשך שמונה שנים האחרונים לא היה עוד כמותו” (!!!).  The highlight of the letter is Rabbi Wasserman's Psikah that even if the  certificates have run out, the young student should be given a certificate that had already been given to someone else!!!   ”עלי להוסיף שדעת הר”מ דמיר היא כך... לדחות אחר מפניו - היינו את מי שאין השעה דוחקת עכשיו תיכף כמותו... ולוי זאת לא הייתי גם אני בא בהצעה מעין זו לדחות אחר. ואני חוזר על דברי שיש בזה סכנת מות ממש ר”ל בעדו אם ילך...”. Letters by the Gaon Rabbi Naftali Wasserman are extremely rare! especially those with such imporatnt content! Good ocndition.  There you can find his humility Enclosed is a letter with the handwritten signature of the letter's subject, the Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Bernstein, Rosh Kolel Beit Yosef, expressing his gratitude to Rabbi Michl David Rozovsky who gave him the above letter. Rabbi Bernstein writes about the Rosh Yeshiva's humility, having travelled with him to the Lomzha Yeshiva in Petach Tikvah and not saying a word about his efforts to bring Rabbi Bernstein to Eretz Yisrael:  ”גיליתי ע”י המכתב... עד כמה עמוק עדינותו וטוהר לבו של אביו זצ”ל [הגר”ש רוזובסקי] שגודל גאונותו הי' לא רק בתורה, אלא גם במידותיו הטובות וצניעות רבה! שכאשר באנו לארצנו הקדושה... ונסע אתנו ביחד לישיבת פתח תקוה [ישיבת לומז'א], ולא הזכיר אף מילה אחת שהודות להשתדלותו הצלחתי לבא ארצה... ”.  *** The Gaon Rabbi Naftali Binush Wasserman (1914-1942) the eldest son of Maran the Gaon Rabbi Elchonon Wasserman, the Rosh Yeshiva of Baranovich and author of Kovetz Shi'urim. Was a disciple of his father, Rabbi Shimon Shkop and Maran the Rav of Brisk. He studied at first at the Baranovich Yeshiva and then at the Mir Yeshiva. Was famed as a great Iluy and Matmid. Sometimes, he replaced his father in Baranovich, when his father travelled for the Yeshiva. During the Holocaust, he was with his father in the Kovno Ghetto, where they studied together Hilchot Kiddush Hashem, which unfortunately, they had to apply during those terrible days of rage.
