Historical! Letter with a Cry for Help from the Detention Camp of Atlit - Handwritten and Signed by the Gaon Rabbi Chizkiyahu Yosef Mishkovsky - Atlit, 1941 - ”כי יעשה כל אשר ביכולתו למהר יציאתנו לחרות” [That he shall do everything in his power to hasten our departure to freedom] - fascinating letter, handwritten and signed by the Gaon Rabbi Chizkiyahu Yosef Mishkovsky Av Beit Din of Krinik - Atlit, 1941.  הנה תרגום לאנגלית השומר על הנימה האישית והכאובה של המכתב, תוך הקפדה על המונחים ההיסטוריים של תקופת המנדט: Rabbi Mishkovsky served as Rav in the cities of Varnava and Krynki in Belarus. At the start of the Holocaust, he was in Vilna, and in 1941, he managed to escape the Valley of the Shadow of Death and immigrate to the Holy Land. Yet his cup of suffering was not yet full; he was captured by the British, who sent him to the infamous Atlit detention camp. This is indicated by this heart-wrenching letter: ”ינעם לי לבשרו כי בחסדי ה' זכינו להגיע תמול לאר”י, אך לעומת זאת לא ינעם לי כלל להודיעו כי הובלנו למחנה עתלית, למותר לבקשו כי יעשה כל אשר ביכולתו למהר יציאתנו לחירות כי החבישה פה... רחוק מעונג לנו ולמשפחתנו....”  [It is a pleasure to inform you that by G-d’s grace we merited to arrive in Eretz Yisrael yesterday; however, it is no pleasure at all to inform you that we were led to the Atlit camp. It is unnecessary to request that he do everything in his power to hasten our departure to freedom, for the imprisonment here... is far from a delight for us and our families...].  Further in the letter, Rabbi Mishkovsky mentions the names of six families who arrived with him, hoping that Rabbi Bar Ilan could arrange their release from British imprisonment as well. The names include that of Rabbi Povarsky... (likely written Baranovich) - referring, apparently, to the revered Rosh Yeshiva, the Gaon Rabbi David Povarsky. Rabbeinu concludes with hissignature: ”חזקי' יוסף מישקאווסקי אבד”ק קרינקי”. An original piece of history! 10X15 cm.  Filing holes affecting the text. Good condition. *** Rabbi Chizkiyahu Yosef Mishkovsky (1884-1947) the Rav of Krinik (Krinky)and one of the leaders of the Union of Rabbis of Poland. Was one of the leaders and founders of the yeshivas committee in Poland and Eretz Yisrael. was close to the Chafetz Chaim and Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinsky.
