”The Jewish Soldiers inLocations Far from any Jewish Settlement” Interesting letter that was Sent from Egypt during the Holocaust by Rabbi Yisrael Brody the Chief Rabbi of Britain - Egypt, 1941 - Letter by Rabbi Yisrael Brody, the Chief Rabbi of Britain - written in the midst of WWII, when he served as a military Rav of the Royal Air Force - Egypt, 1941.  Background : As is well known, the Jewish Yishuv played a significant role in the Allied war effort during World War II. Tens of thousands of its members volunteered for the British Army, motivated by the fear of an invasion of Eretz Yisrael, a desire for vengeance against the German enemy, and the ambition to gain military expertise for the future. Many thousands volunteered for the Royal Air Force (RAF), a large portion of whose bases were located in the Suez Canal zone in Egypt. Rabbi Yisrael Brody, who was then at the height of his rabbinical career, volunteered to head the Jewish Rabbinate Department of the RAF and was stationed at the Middle East Command headquarters, which was based in Egypt at the time. In his letter, Rabbi Brody thanks Rabbi Meir Bar Ilan for his invitation to come to the Seder in his home in Jerusalem. Rabbi Brody, however, states that he cannot leave the many soldiers who will be forced to celebrate alone in a foreign country: ”לדאבוני הרב לא אוכל לקבל את הזמנתו הפעם, מכיון שדוקא בימי החג הנני עסוק יותר בתפקידי בין החיילים במקומות המרוחקים מישוב יהודי...” [To my great regret, I will not be able to accept his invitation this time, since it is specifically during the holiday days that I am most occupied with my duties among the soldiers in locations far from any Jewish settlement...].    20.5X25.5 cm.  Filing perforations. Before that he served as Rav of the Orthodox community of Melbourne, Australia and as a Military Rav of the British Army during WWI. Was the founder of the congress of Eurpean rabbis and helped Jewish refugees after the Holocaust. Edited the book Etz Chaim by Rabbi Yaakov ben Rabbi Yehuda Chazan published by Mossad HaRav Kook.
