Telz and Its Sages: Letter of Recommendation Handwritten and Signed by the Gaon Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Bloch the Rosh Yeshiva of Telz - 1940 - ”And he has already reached a superior level in sharpness and knowledge” - fine letter of recommendation -  handwritten and signed by the Gaon Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Bloch Av Beit Din and Ram of Telz - addressed to the Gaon Rabbi Eliyahu Butschke the Rosh Yeshiva of Etz Chaim Montreux -  Telz, 1940ץ  Many young men who escaped for fear of being recruited into the army or other troubles, escaped to the Montreux Yeshiva in Switzerland. One of them was the Gaon Rabbi Aharon Yehuda Leib Shteinman. This is a letter by Rabbi Bloch recommending a student of his who planned to immigrate to Switzerland to study in Rabbi Eliyahu's Yeshiva.  Rabbi Bloch writes: ”He now wishes to travel to their country for his livelihood and surely he will remain in his country some time and want to study in his Yehsiva...” . Rabbi Bloch warmly recommends his student: ”The above is superior in his talents and has already reached a superior level in sharpness and knowledge he is also Maskil in Yirat Elokim and has good manners....”.  Letters by Rabbeinu are extremely rare! Official stationery.  20X28 cm.  Stains. Good condition.  *** The Gaon Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Bloch (1890-1941) the son and successor of the famed Gaon the Maharil of Telz. In 1921 was already appointed to give lessons in the Yeshiva alongside his father. In 1930, he was appointed the Rav of Telz and its Rosh Yeshiva. When the Russians invaded Lithuania, they closed down all the yeshivas; the one in Telz however continued to study in secret in five different cities, Rabbi Bloch taking care of all their needs. He perished in Tamuz 1941. His great-grandson is the Gaon Rabbi Shalom Ber Sorotzkin Shlita, the head of the Ateret Shlomo institutions.
