Rare and Early Broadside Depicting the Great Famine in Jerusalem in the Late 19th Century - Jerusalem, 1879 - For in this year, there is almost no bread in all our land - Kol Kore Mih Yirpa Lach - rare broadside with a call for help addressed to Jews abroad - by the rabbis of the Ashkenazic and Sephardic communities - following three years of famine in Eretz Yisrael - Jerusalem, 1879.  The broadside depicts the horrific situation of a long and lingering famine lasting three years: ”And every single day, the cry of those famished by hunger from the Holy Land resounded... The famine has intensified, and its appearance is terrible and fearsome.... Just as the soul of the witness aches to see a wretched person writhing in terrible agony with no one to heal him, so our souls weep for the condition of the children of Zion, swooning from hunger...”.  The rabbis of Jerusalem emphasize in their letter that they are not requesting donations of money but rather shipments of flour and beans!!! ”And now, dear and beloved brothers! Our plea is for wheat and flour rather than money, for beans and rice, grain and food, and not for coins; since coins will not save us, or their benefit is too distant. For in this year, there is almost no bread in all our land, and our bread comes only from afar. Therefore, our request is that the great volunteers send us flour... so that the land shall not be cut off by famine, God forbid”.  The letter is signed in print by the following:  The Rishon LeZion Rabbi Avraham Ashkenazi and the Gaon Rabbi Raphael Meir Panigel and the leaders of the Sephardic community.  Maran the gaon Rabbi Shmuel Salant and the rabbis and leaders of the Ashkenazic community.  Extremely rare!
