Rare! The Famed Basel Haggadah in an Original Printed Binding: Haggadah shel Pesach with an Ashkenazi Translation and Fine Wood-Engraved Illustrations - Basel, 1816 - Seder Haggadah shel Pesach, ”with an Ashkenazi translation...Translated into German [in Tzur letters] and with notes provided...”. Printed in Basel at the Wilhelm Printing House by Reb Shlomo Kushilzberg - 1816. Yaari 399; Otzar Hahaggadot 565. [2], 54 pp. Moth perforations and some moth damage. 2 detached leaves. Stains and some tears along the edges. Ornate printed original binding; the front and back flyleaves were printed alongside the leaves of the Haggadah and they are also ornate. Good-fair overall condition. Rare and special Haggadah with fine wood-engraved illustrations made especially for this Haggadah (see below). An important Haggadah that stands out among the thousands versions that were printed over the years. Due to its importance, it had many facsimile editions. The translation and comments are by Yoel Brill. About the illustrations of this Haggadah, A. Yaari worte in the introduction to his monumental book Bibliographia shel Haggadot Pesach (p. XVI) that unlike other illustrated Haggadahs of the 20th century, which imitated those that preceded them, the illustrations of this Haggadah were a novelty in their style, technique and motifs.
