The Famed OMZSA Haggadah: Numbered and Signed (!) Edition Printed in the Midst of the Holocaust - Budapest, 1942 - Passover Haggadah, published by OMZSA – Országos Magyar Zsidó Segítő Akció, the National Hungarian Jewish Aid Organization. Budapest, 1942. Hebrew and Hungarian on facing pages.  This is one of the most impressive and special Haggadahs that were printed in Europe during the war - large-sacle artistic Haggadah that was printed in the momentous hour of Hungarian Jews.  This copy is a numbered copy - #883 of a limited edition of 1000 copies only that were printed on quality paper.  The Haggadah is accompanied by imporatnt forewords and studies: a foreword by Dr. Moshe Rivery; a comprehensive study of the history of the Haggadah and of the art of illustration by Dr. Moshe Munkatchi; translation and comments by Dr. Eliezer Kahn; and a compilation of sheet music by Dr. Ben-tzvat Avigdor Sabolchi. The design of the book and its ornaments were made by the graphic artist B. Gandor.  Alongside the numbering of the copy, the three artists added their handwritten signaturee. These signatures appear in only some of the copies.  Printed on the margins of the book are reproductions of leaves of ancient Haggadahs taken from manuscripts and rare editions. These accompany the text and give it a scholarly and artistic character alike. The design of the Hebrew fonts was inspired by the Haggadah that was published in Jerusalem in 1930 by Nachum Lifshitz.  Printed at the end of the book is sheet music for the Piyyutim of Leil Haseder including Ha Lachma, Ki Lo Naeh, Chasal Siddur Pesach, Adir Huh and Chad gadya.  This is an impressive and exceptional Haggadah - an important cultural and historical document from the last years of Hungarian Jewry before its destruction.  Yaari 2293; Otzar Hahaggadot 3879.  LVII, [1], 73, [1], LXI–LXXXII, [1] pp. Approx. 34 cm. Thick quality paper. Good-very good condition. Some aging stains. The front board is missing.
