First Edition - Rare Condiiton!! Drush Pesach Gadol by the Yavetz - printed in the Author's House - Altona, 1775 - Copy of the Rav of Sadigura - Sefer Drush Pesach Gadol by Rabbi Yaakov Emden - the Yavetz. This is the extremely rare first edition which was printed during its author's lifetime and in his home, as stated by the title page: נדפס בבית המחבר”. Altona, 1775. The book contains and precious Drush for Shabbat Hagadol, which was delivered by the Yavetz when he was Rav of Emden in 1730 and later in Altona in 1774. This is a sharp and deep sermon in which the Yavetz addresses a complex Sugya, while solving more than a hundred Kushiyot and Dikdukim - ”ונתיישבו יותר ממאה דקדוקים חזקים, הכל מניה וביה”. It is well-known that the Yavetz' rabbinate period in Emden was short-lived. After resigning his position there, he never held another rabbinic position and even used to say with humor ”ברוך שלא עשני אב”ד” , referring to the Birkat Hashachar ”שלא עשני עבד”. In his introduction to this book, the Yavetz praises the Drush more than any of his other books: ”כל שומעיו אמרו כי לא שמעו ולא האזינו מעולם דרוש יקר הערך ונחמד כזה… יורד נוקב עד התהום… ונשבעו מביני מדע שלמדו בישיבות המפורסמות שבארצות הללו – שלא שמעו דוגמתו” [”All who heard it declared that they had never listened nor heard a Drush so precious and delightful… one that descends and pierces the very depths. Scholars of renown, who had studied in the most famous yeshivos of these lands, swore that they had never heard its equal]. The Yavetz adds that exceptionally, he repeated the exact same sermon many years later, in his synagogue in Altona: ”נשנה פה בבהכ”נ שלי שנת תקל”ד לפ”ק, לא מפני דבר שנתחדש בו, רק להראות יופיה של תורה, הודה והדרה ותפארתה”. The Yavetz also writes that he regards the actual delivering of the sermon as if he had sacrificed a spiritual Korban Pesach: ”הקרבתי קרבן פסח – זה הרוחני – במועדו”. This is a rare and most sought-after book, one of the last printed by the Yavetz in his lifetime. In his introduction, he calls it ” Acharon Chaviv ”. The book has rarely been auctioned - to the best of our knowledge, only three times in the past. This is an especially well-preserved copy ; the hundreds of years that have passed since its printing are almost unnoticed. The book was kept throughout the years in leading libraries in Israel and abroad; the leaves are healthy and complete, without tears or moth signs which are typical of three-hundred-year-old books. The book is bound in an old leather binding, thick and of high quality, in excellent condition, which protected it as if it were placed in a case. Pedigreed Chassidic copy This copy had belonged to the Admor Rabbi Nachum Dober of Sadigura - the son of the Admor Rabbi Shalom Yosef, the son of the Rav of Ruzhin and son-in-law of his uncle, the Admor Rabbi Avraham Yaakov of Sadigura. Appearing on the title page is his personal stamp and an additional stamp ”Minchat Shai” - with which he used to stamp the books he had received as a gift. Bibliography: Y.
