Historical - Letter of Protest against a United Religious Front - by Many Lithuanian Gedolei Hador - Sent to Rabbi Yitzchak Meir Levin - 1960 - Fascinating historical item - letter of protest against the intention of Agudat Yisrael to unite with HaMizrachi towards the elections in 1960 - sent to the president of Agudat Yisrael Rabbi Yitzchak meir Levin, the son-in-law of the Imrei Emet - by dozens of contemporary Lithuanian rabbis - 1960.  Background: towards the elections for the fourth Knesset, which were held in 1960, voices rose among Agudat Yisrael calling to establish a united religious front with the Mafdal, as was done during the first elections on 1949, an act that was supported by the Chazon Ish.  Maran the Rav of Brisk fought against this intention. According to several members of Agudat Yisrael, he agreed to give Agudat Yisrael a letter of support if they run in the elections by themselves.  This document reveals waht was done behind-the-scenes of the struggle against the religious front. The letter, which was sent to Rabbi Yitzchak Meir Levin, is signed (typewritten signatures) by many Lithuanian rabbis, mainly of the Chazon Ish circle/ Many of them eventually became leading rabbis.  These include Maran Rabbi Steinman, Rabbi Michl Yehuda Lefkovich, Rabbi Gedalya Nadel, Rabbi Nissim Karlitz, Rabbi Dov Landau, Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, Rabbi Gershon Edelstein, Rabbi David Schmidel and more. A total of 87 names.  In their letter, the rabbis write sharply and decisively: ”ובכל כחנו נצא למלחמת מצוה בגלוי נגד הקמת החזית הדתית, ובכל הדרכים נמנע את כל שלומי אמוני ישראל מלהצביע... ואל ישלו את עצמם כי נשלים חלילה עם המצב של ”דיעבד”...” [And with all our might, we shall go forth openly into an Milchemet Mitzvah against the establishment of the Religious Front, and we shall utilize every means to prevent all Shlomei Emunei Yisrael from voting... And let them not delude themselves into thinking that we will ever, heaven forbid, reconcile with a de facto situation...].
