Historical! Couple of Original Rare Photographs from the First Visit of the Admor of Sanz Klausenburg to the Western Wall after Its Liberation – 1967 - Couple of rare original photographs taken by the famed photographer Kalman Weiss (Pohoto Weiss) documenting the historical visit of the Admor of Sanz Klausenbrg on his way to the Western Wall after its liberations in 1967. The pictures depict the Rebbe's impressive figure on his way to the Western Wall escorted by two members of the security forces. One of the pictures also features a young Chassid among the escorts. The first visit of the Rebbe of Sanz to the Western Wall In 1967, the Admor of Sanz Klausenburg, the Gaon Rabbi Yekutiel Halberstam, was living in the USA. The atmosphere in Israel was tense as Arab armies threatened the State. From afar, the Rebbe followed the situation with concern. At the same time, there was great celebration in his home for the engagement of his oldest daughter to his Iluy son-in-law, Rabbi Shlomo Goldman - the future Zvhil Rebbe of the USA. When the joyous news of the liberation of the Western Wall arrived on the 28th of Iyar, the Rebbe was filled with an immense longing and yearning to visit the remnant of our Holy Temple. However, due to the war, the skies over Israel were closed, and there was no civilian air traffic. But the Rebbe, who never let obstacles stand in his way, found a way to arrive. Thus, on that very day, without informing anyone, the Rebbe found himself on a military aircraft making its way from America to the Land of Israel. How did he manage to do this? No one knows. Upon his arrival in Israel, his associate Rabbi Gershon Lieder learned that the Rebbe had arrived in Israel and he immediately went to greet him; together, they traveled to Kiryat Sanz in Netanya. However, the Rebbe wouldn't stay there for even a single hour and requested that a car be summoned to take him to Jerusalem - to the Western Wall. When the Chassidim attempted to dissuade him from the idea, he spoke with strength, declaring: ”I am prepared to travel by bus or even to crawl on my hands and knees; I desire to reach the Western Wall now, no matter what”. Meanwhile, night fell, and it was no longer practical to travel up to Jerusalem. At dawn the following day, the Rebbe requested a car and drove to Jerusalem along with his future son-in-law. Upon reaching the Western Wall plaza, he burst into stormy, unrestrained weeping. Between his broken sobs, he said: ”We are likened to children who were exiled from their father's house for many years; when the time finally came and their father’s mercy swelled within him, he sent for them. Yet upon their arrival, he let them remain outside. He did not give them permission to enter within… ”. Thus he stood, weeping bitterly without stopping. The famed photographer Kalman (Karl) Weiss (1908-2000) of Austrian origin. Was one of the senior photographers of the Chareidi community and the successor of Tzadok Basan. From his studio in Meah She'arim, where he worked alongside his wife Devorah, Weiss documented prominent Admorim and Rabbis as well as events and weddings. His work, which he titled ”The History of a Nation, the Jewish Yishuv in Eretz Yisrael” or with the stamp of Photo Weiss, is considered a unique record of Yerushalayim Demata of the 20th century.
