Series of Historical Photographs of the Belzer Rebbe during the Event of Laying the Cornerstone of the Belz Yeshiva on Agripas St. - Elul 2, 1954 - Three original photographs by the photographer Kalman Weiss (Photo Weiss) documenting the historical Belzer event - the laying of the cornerstone of the Belz Yeshiva on Agripas St. of Jerusalem which was attended by the Admor the Mahara of Belz, on Elul 2, 1954. 1. Maran sitting by a table with his in-law Rabbi Yechiel Chaim Lavin and Rabbi Shalom Eichenztein of Ziditchov Safed. Approx. 12X18 cm. 2. The laying of the cornerstone On Elul 2 1954, the ceremony of the laying of the cornerstone for the building of the yeshiva on Agripas St. Jerusalem took place. The ceremony was attended by thousands who came to rejoice with the reviving Belzer Chassidut. The Rebbe considered the event very significant, seeing it as the cornerstone for rebuilding the legacy of his glorious Chassidut after the terrible destruction of the Holocaust. He even gave orders not to say the Tachanun prayer on that day. When the Rebbe was given the brick for the cornerstone, he asked for mortar as well, explaining that the mortar was necessary to put under the brick so it would stay in place perfectly. As he laid the stone with his own hands, he said: ” I am laying this cornerstone so that Jewish youth can learn Torah and Yirat Hashem here . I also make it a condition that people can eat, drink, and take care of all their needs in this Beit Midrash”. He ended with a blessing that the construction should go smoothly and that we should merit the coming of the Messiah soon. This was apparently the only time the Rebbe ever left his personal quarters to attend a public celebration or religious event of any kind.
