Interesting Letter Signed [Twice] by Leading Rabbis of Jerusalem Headed by the Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Yerucham Diskin - Rare, important and fascinating letter bearing the handwritten signatures - not once but twice - of leading rabbis and Tzaddikim of Jerusalem headed by the Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Yerucham Diskin, the only son and successor of the Saraf of Brisk, Maran the Maharil Diskin. Jerusalem, 1916. The eve of Shavu'ot.  In their letter, the Geonim of Jerusalem agree to give the substantial sum of four hundred and eighty golden Franks - donation of the Jews of Philadelphia - to the poor of Jerusalem, for Shavu'ot.  The format of this document is unusual: two distinct parts intertwining on a single sheet, each part having been signed separately by the rabbis. On the first part of the document appears the rabbis' agreement in principle to  distribute the funds among poor Talmidei Chachamim of Jerusalem for the upcoming Shavu'ot;  In the second part - which was written later - the rabbis reconfirm with their signatures the actual reception of the funds. This inner division of the document gives each of the parts a defined and clear status yet also forms a fascinating unity.  The distribution of Kimcha Depischa was a deep-rooted custom of Jewish communities; this document, however, indicates a less-common practice - the distribution of Kimcha Deshau'ot to Talmidei Chachamim of Jerusalem, even though Shavu'ot is shorter and does not involve so many expenses as Passover. This highlights the sensitivity of the leading rabbis of Jerusalem to the needs of Bnei Torah even on other occasions and their concern that nothing should be lacking from the joy of the holiday. Fold line in the center, between the letter's two parts.  *** The signatory rabbis:  The Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Yerucham Diskin (1867-1934) the son of the Gaon Rabbi Yehoshua Leib Diskin (the Maharil Diskin). Immigrated to Jerusalem as a child and was educated by Gedolei Torah in his father's home. After his father has passed away, he headed his institutions.  The Gaon Rabbi Yechiel Michl Tucazinsky (1871-1055) Was born in Lithuania and immigrated to Eretz Yisrael. Author of Lu'ach Eretz Yisrael and Gesher Hachaim - Halachic Sifrei Yesod. The Rosh Yeshiva of Etz Chaim and Rav of the Mekor Baruch neighborhood. Was the grandson and confidante of Rabbi Shmuel Salant, the Eav of Jerusalem.  Rabbi Zeev Shachor (1869-1941) the father of the Jerusalem Shachor family, the grandson of Rabbi Chaim Leib Shachor of Mir. Was the head of Kollel Vilna and in his old age, served as the head of the Vaad Haklali of the Kollelim of Jerusalem.  Rabbi Yitzchak Hagiz (ca. 1857-1918) a Chabad Chassid who immigrated from Vitebsk to Jerusalem in the late 19th century. After his immigration, adopted an Eastern family name. Was one of the founders of the Yemin Moshe neighborhood, where he lived until his passing.  The Gaon Rabbi Dober Halevu Epstein (ca. 1866-1931) the son of the author of Aruch Hashulchan and brother of the author of the Torah Temimah. Chose to settle Eretz Yisrael rather than hold a rabbinic position abroad.  Was one of the rabbis of Jeruslaem who signed the Heiter Mechirah in 1910.  Rabbi Zalman Baruch Hacohen Rubin (1861-1922) chairman of Vaad Haklali Knesset Yisrael and vice-chairman of the city council. Worked for the building of the Meah She'arim neighborhood, supervised Kollel Vilna and was a member of the board of the Bikkur Cholim Hospital.Also acted as a representative of  Rav Kook.  This document is of special interest not only due to its content but also due to its format: each part is independent as indicated by the double signatures yet combined with the other, forms the complete unit.
