He studied Torah from Gedolei Hador, most notably Maran the Gaon Rabbi Shimon Shkop. In 1935, to avoid conscription into the Polish army, he immigrated to Eretz Yisrael with his friend, Rabbi Zalman Rottberg, who would later become the Rosh Yeshiva of Beit Meir. In 1944, when the Ponevezh Yeshiva was established by Rabbi Yosef Shlomo Kahaneman, Rabbi Shmuel was called upon to head the yeshiva alongside Maran the Gaon Rabbi David Povarsky and Maran the Gaon Rabbi Elazar Menachem Mann Shach. Rabbi Shmuel became known as a pillar of Hora'ah and Limud in the yeshiva. His lessons were delivered with immense Amal and precision, and some were published in the books Shiurei Rabbi Shmuel on the tractates of the Talmud. In his light, hundreds of contemporary Talmidei Chachamim grew, many of whom became Rosh Yeshivas and Torah leaders.
