Foundational Historical Letter by the Rebbe! The Source for the Rebbe’s Opinion against Excessive Wedding Expenses! And regarding the Preference for Weddings in Kislev Kislev, 1954 - This letter by the Rebbe is a most important historical letter, a foundational letter containing Torat Chaim - an instruction to set a wedding in Kislev and about inviting many people to the wedding - this letter is the source for these instructions which are frequently cited.  Typewritten letter on the Rebbe's aerogram from Kislev 10, 1954. The Rebbe notes the delay in reciving the letter: ”ולפלא שנתארך כ”כ דרך הילוכו” [it is a wonder that its journey was delayed for so long].  Make an Effort to Set a Wedding Date in Kislev In his letter, the Rebbe refers to what the addressee had written in his letter: ובמה שכותב שמכמה סיבות יש קס”ד שלא תהי' חתונתם בחדש כסלו, לדעתי אינו נכון כלל. וכדאי להשתדל כפי האפשרי שתהי' החתונה בחדש גאולתנו ופדות נפשנו, ירחא תליתאי מתחלת השנה. .. בודאי ימצאו אופן המתאים, אשר בדרכי שלום ובדרכי נועם יבוא זה אל הפועל [As for what he writes that for various reasons one might initially assume that their wedding should not be held in the month of Kislev, in my view this is entirely incorrect. Rather, one should make every possible effort to ensure the wedding take place in the month of our redemption and soul's deliverance, the third month from the start of the year... Assuredly, a fitting manner will be found to realize this through peaceful and pleasant means].  Having an Average Wedding so As Not to Get into Debt Later, the Rebbe expresses his opinion about overspending, writing: ”בענין אופן עריכת החתונה אם להרבות מספר הקרואים וכו', שאז קשור זה עם כניסה בחובות גדולים ע''פ מכתבו, הרי לדעתי אין כדאי הדבר . וכבר ידוע פסק הרמב''ם ז''ל בהלכות דיעות פ''ג אשר הדרך המיצוע הוא הדרך הישר והנכון. והוא מובן עפ''י ביאור תורת החסידות, אשר דוקא קו האמצעי הוא בריח התיכון ועולה למעלה מעלה” [Regarding the manner of conducting the wedding, whether to increase the number of guests, etc., which according to his letter involves entering into large debts, in my opinion, it is not worthwhile.
