Unique Letter Handwritten Entirely by Rabbi Avraham Dober Kahana Shapira of Kovno - Germany, Lag BaOmer, 1929 - Letter with rare content, handwritten and signed by the famed Gaon Rabbi Avraham Dober Kahana Shapira, the Rav of Kovno and author of Shut Devar Avraham. Berlin, Lag BaOmer, 1929.  The letter is addressed to the Gaon Rabbi Yisrael Zissel Dvortz, the right-hand-man of Maran the Saba of Slabodka and the moving spirit of the historical trasfer of the Slabodka Yeshiva to Eretz Yisrael and of the establishment of the Hebron Yeshiva in Hebron. Written several months before the 1929 Riots, after which the yeshiva was moved to Jerusalem.  At the beginning of the letter, the DEvar Avraham notes that he is staying now in Berlin on his way to a resort town in Germany.  Rabbi Yisrael Zissel Dvortz, who was a visionary with original ideas, used his talents to establish the Torah world. One of his special enterprises was the establishment of the Bak for Hebron's Development for supporting the Slabodka Yeshiva and later, the establishment of a similar institution for supporting the Lomzha Yeshiva in Petach Tikvah.  The letter indicates that Rabbi Dvortz had approached the Devar Avraham with a suggestion pertaining to the vacationers in German resort towns. The letter, however, reached Kovno after the Devar Avraham had already left for Garmany; when he became aware of its content, the vacationers had already left the place.  The letter does not imply what the suggestion included; yet it does indicate that the Devar Avraham saw it as important, writing that he would deal with it again when the vacationers return at the end of the summer.  This is an exceptional letter; whereas  most of the Devar Avraham's letters deal with Chidushei Torah, Psikah and Halachic Shut, this one deals with a unique public initiative - indicating the activity of Gedolei Torah beyond the walls of the Beit Midrash.  [1] postcard. Filing perforations.  *** The Gaon Rabbi Avraham Dober Kahana Shapira, the Rav of Kovno and author of Shut Devar Avraham (1871-1943) the last Rav of Kovno and a leading contemporary Rav and Posek. Leader of Lithuanian Jewry. His book DEvar Avraham was accepted as a Sefer Yesod in the yeshiva world. In 1939, he travelled to Switzerland for medicinal reasons yet returned to Kovno with the outbreak of WWII stating that the captain does not abandon the ship in a storm. He passed away in the Kovno Ghetto and his funeral was the last large funeral there.  The addressee, the Gaon Rabbi Yisrael Zissel Dvortz (1885-1968), known by the penname Platin, was a leading Talmid Chacham, the right-hand-man of Maran the Saba of Slabodka Rabbi Natan Zvi Finkel. He was the moving spirit of the historical trasfer of the Slabodka Yeshiva to Eretz Yisrael and of the establishment of the Hebron Yeshiva in Hebron. Rabbi Dvortz was also known for his unique financial initiatves for the Torah world.
