Interesting! Stamps of Rabbeinu the Malbim on Works by One of the First Maskilim: Levanon Gan Na'ul by Naftali Hertz Wessely - Warsaw, 1838 - Couple of books: Levanon-Gan Na'ul by Naftali Hertz Wessely, one of the founders of the Haskalah Movement. Section I-II bound together with a separate title page for each section. The work deals with the foundations of Hebrew and is considered one of the first comprehensive attempts to scientifiaclly introduce the structure of Hebrew. With approbations by Rabbi Shaul Mortira, Rabbi Shaul Halevi Av Beit Din of Hague and more. Warsaw, 1838.  On the two sections, there are several ownership stamps of the Gaon Rabbi Meir Leibush Malbim. In the center of the title page of Section I, his stamp is imprinted: ”מאיר ליבוש מלבי”ם אב”ד באקארעשט והמדינה”. On the last page of Section I, there is anther, different stamp:  ”מאיר ליבוש מלבים בעל מחבר ספר ארצות החיים”; it appears again on the last page of Section II.  In addition to their significance as the personal copies of one of Gedolei Yisrael in the 19th century and one of the foremost commentators of the bible of all times, these books hold a historical discovery.  They are concrete evidence of the Malbim's attitude to Naftali Hertz Wessely's writings. It is well-known that the Malbim was one of the fierce opponents of the Haskalah Movement. Yet scholars have already stated that his attitude to Wessely was more complicated and balanced. This is indicated, among others, in the Malbim's commentary on Sefer Yeshayahu ; there, he cites Wessely: ”ראיתי לאחד מן המבארים... מביא בשם הרנה”ו [הרב נפתלי הירץ וייזל] בהבדל בין שם בלהה לשם בהלה.” The fact that Wessley's books belonged to the Malbim's personal library, bearing his ownership stamps, indicates that the Malbim owned the books and probably studied them. This is valuable historical information for understanding the Malbim's attitude to Wessley and his wirtings.  Section I: [6], 3-98, [1] leaves.  Section II: [4], 6-152 leaves.  21 cm.  Good condition. Scuffed binding with a new fabric spine.  ***   The Gaon Rabbi Meir Leibush Weiser - the Malbim (1809-1880) one of the foremost commentators of the bible  and leader of Eastern-eErope Jewry. In his youth was known as the Iluy of Vohlin. Served as Rav of several central Euroepan cities and fiercly fought the Reform MOvement. Was also knowledgeable of Kabbalah and was a disicple of Rabbi Zvi Hirsch of Zifitchov. The Beit Halevi said that the Malbim's books were written with Ru'ach Hakodesh.  Naftali Hertz Wessely (d. 1805) of the first leaders of the Haskalah Mobement. Was a disicple of Rabbi Shalom Dubno. His book Yein Levanon was approbated by Gedolei Hador including the Noda BiYehuda. However, when he published his book Divrei Shalom VeEmet supporting secular studies for Jewish children, he was opposed by all Fedolei Hador. Nevertheless, his words in his other books are cited by leading Asheknazi rabbis.
