Dozens of Glosses Handwritten by Rabbi Yeshaya Halevi Horowitz: Levushei Serad Yoreh Deah - First Edition Mahlov, 1812 - Sefer Levushei Serad on Yoreh Deah by the Gaon Rabbi David Shlomo Eibeschitz author of Arvei Nachal. Mahlov, 1812. First edition. Atefansky Chassidut #256. Pedigreed copy that was owned by Rabbi Yeshaya Halevi Horowitz of Safed - a direct descendant of Rabbi Yeshaya Horowitz author of the Shelah Hakadosh - the father of Rabbi Shmuel Horowitz of Breslov.  The book bears many signatures and ownership stamps of Rabbi yeshaya Horowitz. On the margins of the leaves and at the beginning of the volume, there are hundreds of lines of glosses, comments and Chidushim handwritten by him [more than a thousand words]. Possibly, some of the glosses are earlier. This is a rare Chassidic copy of the first edition of a Halachic-Chassidic Sefer Yesod that was owned by a leading contemporary Chabad Rav, with hundreds of glosses and Chidushim handwritten by him.  [1], 102 leaves. 25.5 cm.  Fair-good overall condition. Marks of usage. Wear to the corners of some leaves. The title page and several leaves have been professionally restored. Some of the glosses are faded. Damage to text in several places. Fine new binding.   *** The author of the book, the Admor Rabbi David Shlomo Eibeschitz (1755-1814) Av Beit Din of Chorostkov and Soroka. In 1809, he immigrated to Eretz Yisrael, settling in Safed. His relative, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev, writes of him in an approbation:  ”חריף ובקי בחדרי תורה כחד מן קמאי וכל מעשיו לשם שמים”. His books are Halachic and Chassidic Sifrei Yesod.  The writer of the glosses, the Gaon Chassid Rabbi Yeshaya Halevi Horowitz (1883-1978) the son of Rabbi Asher Yechezkel Halevi Horowitz and the son-in-law of Rabbi Yitzchak Loberbaum the grandson of the Rav of Safed, Rabbi Shmuel Heller. Since 1908, served as the Rav of the Chabadic community of Safed and Rav of the Tzemach Tzeddek Synagogue of the town.  Due to financial difficulties, in 1922, Rabbi Horowitz was forced to leave to Canada, where he served for over thirty years as the head of the rabbis of Winnipeg and the Chief Rabbi of Western Canada.  Authored important books including Yavo Shiloh, Pardes HaAretz and Eden Zion. In 1953, he returned to Israel. His son is the famed Chassid Rabbi Shmuel Horowirtz - an important Breslov Rav and Mashpi'a.
