The Chatam Sofer of Rabbi Meir Shapira of Lublin with a Gloss Handwritten by Him: Chatam Sofer Section VI - First Edition Wien / Pressburg, 1864 - Sefer Yesod! Chatam Sofer Section VI. The personal copy of the Gaon Rabbi Meir Shapira of Lublin - the Rosh Yeshiva of Chachmei Lublin and the founder of the Daf Yomi. The book contains many ownership stamps and a genius gloss handwritten by him.  This Sefer Yesod accompanied the Maharam Shapira in all the stations of his life, as indicated by the many ownership stamps appearing on its leaves: ”מאיר שפירא האבד”ק גלינא”; ”מאיר שפירא אב”ד ור”מ פיעטרקוב”; Until the last one:  ”בית עקד הספרים בישיבת חכמי לובלין, לובארטאווסקא 57, לובלין”. This stamp is from when he lived in Yeshivat Chachmei Lublin, to where he moved his large personal library. There, among his students who were like sons to him, he passed away.  The Maharam Shapira, who was a Gaon, is unafraid to comment on the words of the Baal HaChatam Sofer. On the margins of the leaf, alongside response 2 in the book, in which the Chasam Sofer allows praying with a plaited headdress even when hairs escape through its holes, there is a gloss handwritten by the Maharam Shapira.  In his genius gloss, he compares the issue to the Yerushalmi, Masechet Yoma, which deals with a completely different issue - refilling water - and is unafraid to disagree with Rabam shel Yisrael, writing with utmost respect and ending with the words: ”ונראה משם קצת דאסור”! A wonderous gloss reflecting the greatness of the Maharam Shapira, who despite his reverence, is aunafraid of disagreeing with Gedolei Yisrael.  This is an extremely rare religious-historical item: a copy of the first edition of Maran the Chasam Sofer's Sefer Yesod, which was the personal copy of the Maharam Shapira of Lublin and contains ownership stamps documenting his life stations and a genius gloss handwritten by him.  [1], 61 leaves. 34 cm.  Good condition. Marks of usage. Stains and other blemishes. New binding.  *** The Gaon Rabbi Meir Shapira of Lublin (1887–1933) was one of the foremost rabbis and educators of the pre-Holocaust generation. Born in Suczawa (Schotz), he was the son of Rabbi Yaakov Shimshon. A brilliant scholar from a young age, he served as Rav in Galina, Sanok, and ultimately in Lublin. In 1930, he founded the renowned Yeshivat Chachmei Lublin, a revolutionary Torah institution known for its rigorous study program, vast library, and its goal of producing outstanding Torah scholars. His most famous innovation -the Daf Yomi - was introduced at the Great Congress of Agudat Yisrael in 1923 and has since become a global tradition of daily Talmud study. He served as president of Agudat Yisrael in Poland and as its representative in the Polish Sejm, advocating for Jewish rights and supporting Torah institutions. Though he passed away at a young age, his impact on Torah learning and Jewish education remains profound and enduring.
