Rare and Fascinating Letter - by the Gaon Rabbi Ben Zion Meir Chai Uziel - from the Time in Salonika, 1921 - ששער הכספים יורד פה באופן מבהיל - special and fascinating letter with a blessing for the New Year - handwritten and signed by the Rishon LeZion Rabbi Ben Zion Meir Chai Uziel - from the short period of two years he served as Rav of Salonika - 1921.  Rav Uziel sent his letter to the editorial staff of the religious journal Hadvir. In his letter, the Rishon LeZion writes that he was very happy to see something that was printed in Jerusalem and even opened one of the journals although it was not meant for him!!! ”רק היום קבלתי ד' חוברות הדביר, כדי לשמוע מלה חדשה מירושלים פתחתי אחד מהם אע”פ שלא היה כתוב לשמי ושמחתי מאד לראות את שכללו גם במראו וגם בתוכנו, את החוברות מסרתי לתעודתן...” . Later, Rav Uziel writes that he doubts the success of selling the monthly journals in his country (Greece) due to high inflation (sounds familiar...): ”מספקני מאד בהצלחתן בשעה זו ששער הכספים יורד פה באופן מבהיל מה שזה מעיק במדה רבה על החיים הכלכליים...” [I am greatly in doubt regarding their success at this time, when the exchange rate of money is dropping here at an alarming rate, which severely burdens economic life...]. At the end of the letter, Rabbeinu writes them warm blessings for the New Year: ”הנני מגיש לכם ברכתי החמה לקראת השנה החדשה לאמר: לשנה טובה תכתבו ותחתמו... והיתה השנה החדשה שנת גאולה וישועה לעמנו ותחיית והרמת קרן תורתנו...”. *** Rabbi Ben Zion Meir Chai Uziel , son of Rabbi Yosef Raphael (1880-1953) author of the Mishpatei Uziel, a leading disciple of the Rishon LeZion Rabbi Shaul Yaakov Elyashar, the Yissa Beracha. In his youth, his father passed away aמd he was forced to work to support his mother and brother; yet nothing affected his love of the Torah. This is what he wrote referring to those days of hardship: ”ימי שלוותי ואושרי היו קצרים. בהגיעי לשנת הבגרות יד ה' היתה בי בהלקח ממני אבי ומגיני. אז אמרתי לנפשי אבדתי. כי מה יעשה נער, כערער בערבה, למצוא דרכו בחיים? אולם חסדי ה', אבי יתומים, גברו עלי... ויהיה לי היום לעבודה והלילה לעיון”. He was a Ravi in Jaffa in 1911, in Salonika in 1921 in place of Rabbi Yaakov Meir and Rabbi Emmanuel Brodo (temporarily), and then served as Rav in in Tel Aviv (1923). In 1939 he was appointed the Rishon LeZion.
