Member of the Russian Geographical Society.He was born in Feodosia in the family of an Armenian merchant. He studied with the Feodosian architect G. Koch, at the Imperial Academy of Arts with M. N. Vorobyov and F. Tanner (since 1833). In 1838-1840 – retired in Italy; visited Germany, France, Spain and Holland (1840-1844). Painter of the Main Naval Staff. In 1845 he traveled to Turkey, Asia Minor, the Greek Archipelago with the expedition of F. P. Litke. Upon his return, he lived and worked in Feodosia (honorary citizen since 1880), presented the city with an art gallery (now the Feodosiya Art Gallery named after I. K. Aivazovsky). He played a big role in the development of Russian marine studies. He painted about 6000 paintings. The author of seascapes, views of seaside towns, paintings dedicated to the history of the Russian navy, battle scenes. He created a number of canvases on biblical subjects.
