[Expert Examination. Marine Landscape.] Georg Emil Libert, “Grotto on the Island of Bornholm”. Denmark. Mid‑19th century (1840s–1850s). Canvas on original wooden stretcher; oil painting. Expert examination carried out by the Grabar All‑Russian Art Research and Restoration Centre. From the expert conclusion: “The work has antique and collectors’ value and may be of interest to a museum collection.” Size: 34.6 × 50 cm. Condition: very good and structurally sound; overall craquelure, light surface wear and traces of age; minor abrasions mainly along the perimeter in the areas of contact with the frame. The compositional solution, manner of painting and character of the impasto are comparable to the artist’s recognised works: “View of Møns Klint” (1846, National Gallery of Art, Washington), “Cape Stevens” (1856, private collection) and “Rocks on Bornholm” (1872, private collection). Infrared photography has revealed a free underdrawing, confirming the original character of the work, while the X‑ray image and structure of the paint layer correspond to the established standards of Libert’s oeuvre. Georg Emil Libert (1820–1908) was a Danish painter and graphic artist, a landscape specialist. In the 1840s he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Johan Ludwig Lund; in the 1850s he travelled in Germany and Switzerland and exhibited in Copenhagen and Vienna. His works are held in the National Gallery of Denmark (Statens Museum for Kunst) in Copenhagen, the Thorvaldsens Museum, the National Gallery of Art, USA, and other museum and private collections.
