Sculpture ”F.I. Chaliapin in the Role of Boris Godunov in M.P. Mussorgsky's Opera 'Boris Godunov'”, after a model by Ya.A. Troupyansky. LFZ, USSR. 1960–1969. Condition: excellent, minimal signs of use. The porcelain sculpture ”Chaliapin in the Role of Boris Godunov” was originally created in the early post-revolutionary years at the State Porcelain Factory (GFZ, formerly the Imperial Porcelain Factory) by the young sculptor Yakov Troupyansky and became one of the defining figures of the ”theatrical” series of the 1920s, devoted to Russian opera and ballet. The figurine was subsequently produced in series during the 1930s and the 1950s–1960s. Each sculpture was painted by hand. Different colour variants and patterns exist. Yakov Abramovich Troupyansky (1878–1955) — sculptor and applied artist. In 1898 he graduated from the Odessa Art School. In 1897 he graduated from the Naples Academy of Fine Arts. He continued his artistic education at the Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg from 1901 to 1909, studying under the sculptor V.A. Beklemishev. Troupyansky, who received a thorough academic training, is regarded as one of the key masters who shaped the ”portrait” and theatrical direction in Soviet porcelain sculpture. His works are held in the collections of the Kuskovo Estate Museum in Moscow, the Theatre Museum (Museum of Theatre and Musical Art, Saint Petersburg), the Peterhof State Museum-Reserve, the State Tretyakov Gallery and the Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts (paintings and sculptures of the early 20th century).
