Large cameo-engraved ”Cassis Madagascariensis” shell Italian manufacture (Torre del Greco), late 19th - early 20th century - Rare and valuable large natural shell, finely cameo-engraved utilizing the different chromatic layers of the shell. The decoration unfolds over two superimposed narrative registers: In the upper register: An allegorical or mythological scene of neoclassical taste depicting female figures (probably muses or nymphs) in a marine or bucolic landscape, one of whom holds a lyre. The precise carving highlights the pure white relief against the brownish-pink background of the shell. In the lower register: A rich garland of masterfully carved flowers and leaves, framing the central composition and giving depth and decorativeness to the entire object. These artifacts, typical of the tradition of the master engravers of Torre del Greco, were intended both for the Grand Tour market and as refined furnishing accessories, often transformed into lamp bases or displayed in private Wunderkammer.
