Ancient Oil Painting on Copper, Bolognese School, 18th Century Oil on copper (ramino), 20 x 15.5 cm. - Bolognese School, 18th century Oil on copper (ramino), 20 x 15.5 cm. Description The work depicts Saint Francis of Assisi caught in a moment of profound ascetic reflection. The iconography follows the classical canons of 18th-century devotional painting: the Saint is presented half-figure, with his gaze turned upwards, one hand to his chest as a sign of humility and the other placed on a skull (memento mori). Beside the figure are the attributes of the open book and the wooden crucifix, elements that define the scene as a meditation on the Passion and the transience of life. The painting refers to a prototype of the Bolognese School, originally preserved in the Pinacoteca Civica Tosio Martinengo in Brescia. The choice of copper support gives the lot a particular chromatic brilliance and meticulous detail definition, characteristics typical of small-format production intended for private collecting or high-ranking domestic devotion. Technical Data Period: circa 1700 Medium: Oil on copper Measurements: 20 x 15.5 cm
