Wall Crucifix with Holy Water Font – Onyx, Silver, and Cloisonné Enamels - A valuable object of sacred art and private devotion, expressing the high European craftsmanship of the second half of the 19th century. The work stands out for its decorative eclecticism, blending the preciousness of hard stone with the technical complexity of enameled goldsmithing. Artistic and Material Analysis: Onyx Support: The cross is carved from a single block of translucent onyx with warm, amber tones, characterized by natural veins that create an effect of spiritual depth. Body of Christ: The ”patiens” Christ and the upper scroll with the inscription ”INRI” are made of finely chased silver (or silver-plated metal), with a high-quality sculptural anatomical rendering. Enamel Decoration: The lobed perimeter of the cross is enriched by a polychrome enamel border executed with the cloisonné technique. The volute and floral motifs, dominated by shades of cobalt blue, light blue, and ochre, recall the refinements of Parisian manufactures influenced by Neo-Renaissance taste and the contemporary Russian goldsmith schools. The Holy Water Font: In the lower part, a small hemispherical basin for holy water is integrated, also entirely decorated with enamel with geometric and floral motifs consistent with the frame.
