Bidspirit auction | Pair of Renaissance Carved Walnut

Pair of Renaissance Carved Walnut 'Sgabello' Stools - This pair of stools represents a refined example of artistic cabinet-making inspired by the Neo-Renaissance style. Crafted from solid walnut wood, they stand out for their sculptural execution of great visual impact and complexity. Key Features: Anthropomorphic Backrest: The openwork backrest is richly carved with figures of caryatids or mythological creatures on the sides, framing a central shield (cartouche) decorated with a rampant lion in relief. Lyre Base: The front support echoes the backrest motif with a structure of opposing volutes, enriched with grotesque masks and acanthus leaf decorations. Seat: The square-shaped seat with carved edges features a central circular indentation, typical of parade or study stools of the era. Material and Patina: The walnut wood has a warm and deep tone, with a natural patina that highlights the details of the hand-carved work. Style and Use: These pieces, historically known as ”sgabelli” (a typical Italian noble seat from the 15th-16th century), are perfect as decorative elements of strong character for entrances, studies, or elegant living rooms. The richness of the carving makes them true furnishing sculptures. Condition: From visual analysis, the stools show excellent preservation of the structure and carvings, maintaining the integrity of the most delicate details of the human figures and floral motifs.
