Walter McClintock Hand Colored Photo 1890-1920
The lot features an original reprint of a hand colored photograph of a Blackfeet Native American Indian Warrior by Walter McClintock. The piece shows vivid coloring of the Blackfeet or Blackfoot American Indian warrior in full war paint and dress showing a bone breast plate, beaded and quilled war shirt. Walter MClintock was a photographer from the late 19th Century to early 20th Century who was known for his depictions of the Blackfeet American Indians of Montana. Some of the prominent American Indian figures he captured during his circa 1890-1900's tenure included Medicine Bull, Black Weasel, White Grass, Wolf Plume, Eagle Feather, Three Guns, Jack Big Moon, Bull Child, Drags His Robe. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and acquired by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman which was both part museum and gallery. This is said to be a later printing of the hand colored photograph and is exceedingly rare. The visible artwork measures 11" x 14" with the frame being 19 1/2" x 22 1/2."
