The John Brown Chippendale Carved Mahogany Diminutive Drop-Leaf Dining Table - The John Brown Chippendale Carved Mahogany Diminutive Drop-Leaf Dining Table Attributed to John Goddard (1724-1785), Newport, Rhode Island, circa 1770. Provenance: John Brown (1736-1803), Providence, Rhode Island; To his daughter, Sarah Brown Herreshoff (1773-1846); To her son Charles Frederick Herreshoff (1809-1888); Thus by descent in the Herreshoff Family line. This diminutive drop leaf table relates directly to two other similar size rectangular leaved tables with John Brown history. One in a private collection survives with its original bill of sale documenting to John Goddard (see Amy Coes, ”A Bill of Sale from John Goddard to John Brown and the Furniture It Documents, ” Magazine Antiques 169, no. 5 (May 2006): 131–133, fig. 6 and RIF1614). Another that descended in the Brown family was sold at Keno Auctions, New York, Inaugural Auction, May 1–2, 2010, lot 253 (see RIF4807). Closed 26 1/4 x 13 x 40 in. (66.7 x 33 x 101.6 cm.)
