The John Brown Chippendale Figured Mahogany Arched Cross-Stretchered, Pembroke Table - The John Brown Chippendale Figured Mahogany Arched Cross-Stretchered Pembroke Table possibly by Peleg Weeden (1772-1839), North Kingstown, Rhode Island, circa 1795. Inscribed on bottom Repaired & Refinished in Spring 1925 by Mr. Oberg - Had dark stain same drawer pull. Spade feed replaced. Provenance: John Brown (1736-1803), Providence, Rhode Island; To his daughter, Sarah Brown Herreshoff (1773-1846); To her son Charles Frederick Herreshoff (1809-1888); Thus by descent in the Herreshoff Family line. While originally thought to be the work of Philadelphia cabinetmaker Adam Hains based upon a similar table in the collection of the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum, acc. no. 1957.669 (see Joseph Downs, American Furniture, Queen Anne and Chippendale periods, in the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum, (New York: Macmillan, 1952), no. 314) it can today be ascribed to the likely hand of Peleg Weeden of North Kingstown, Rhode Island. A nearly identical table with the same shaped top, stretchers and tapered legs with reverse stop fluting is in the collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum (acc. no. 2019.1.1, RIF6555, and ”New Acquisitions Join Collections of Wadsworth Atheneum, ” Antiques and the Arts Weekly (July 26, 2019): 39) which descended in the Fowler family of North Kingston.
