Provenance: John Brown (1736-1803), Providence, Rhode Island; To his daughter, Sarah Brown Herreshoff (1773-1846); To her son Charles Frederick Herreshoff (1809-1888); Thus by descent in the Herreshoff family. A related rack was found in Bristol, Rhode Island and is in the collection of the Henry Francis du Pont Museum (acc. no. 57.102) (see Charles F. Montgomery, American Furniture: The Federal Period, (New York: Viking Press, 1966), pp. 434-5, no. 442. 69 1/2 x 18 x 18 in. (176.5 x 45.7 x 45.7 cm.)
