Chippendale Mahogany Desk and Bookcase - Chippendale Mahogany Desk and Bookcase School of John I. Wells, Hartford, CT, c. 1780-95. A nearly identical desk and bookcase is still in the Wells family made by John I. Wells, active from 1790 to 1800 in Hartford, CT and is illustrated in ”Connecticut Valley Furniture” by Robert Lionetti and Thomas and Alice Kugelman, p. 372. Provenance: Joan Brownstein at the Triple Pier Antiques Show, 1999 77 1/2 x 38 1/4 x 19 1/4 in. (196.9 x 97.2 x 48.9 cm.) Condition: Lowermost backboard replaced. One bookcase door lacks lock. Lacks keys shrinkage crack to fall board. Stains, bruises and wear to interior/writing surface. Brasses replaced. Scattered losses to drawer lips. Shrinkage cracks to case sides. Small chip to mid molding at side front corner. Typical wear consistent with age and use. Otherwise, in overall good condition. Thank you for your interest in our upcoming sale.
