Pair of Queen Anne Walnut Compass-Seat Side Chairs - Pair of Queen Anne Walnut Compass-Seat Side Chairs Massachusetts, 1740-1760. Provenance: Israel Sack, Inc. New York; Joseph H. Hirshhorn (1899-1981), Greenwich, CT; Sotheby's, Park-Bernet, New York, January 30, 1982, lot 1158; Private East Coast Collection; Christie's, New York, January 22, 2016, sale 11985, lot 65; Property from the Collection of William and Meryl Russell, New Jersey 40 3/4 in. (103.5 cm.) Condition: One chair: With crest repinned at stiles. Upper splat with 2” x 10” vertical patch to right side and 3” patch at juncture with shoe. Repairs to shoe. Left stile with 8” patch at juncture with seat rail and further strengthened with spline. Slip seat and seat frame both marked 11”. Patch to right rear foot. Shrinkage crack to front left foot. Wear to feet and knees commensurate with age and use. The other: With crest repinned to stiles. Similar patch to opposite side of splat. Slip seat and seat frame marked “IV”. Repinned and strengthened throughout. Good checking to feet. Both chairs sturdy and ready for prime time. Thank you for your interest in our upcoming sale.
