Why I Wrote Designing My Life - Due to my adventurous nature, as a single New York girl in her twenties in the blessed sixties, I traveled the world with the goal of becoming a world citizen. Among my adventures, of romance, business and wanderings, two particular adventures in my life turned out to be so significant that I felt they had to be documented. One was living and doing business in Afghanistan before the Taliban and before the Russians. In a country that was time warped in the 14th century, I was a young Jewish girl, living and working in a Muslim country where I experienced lifestyles which epitomized the truest manifestation of brotherly love I've ever seen. I traveled the entire country designing and manufacturing carpets which were mostly manufactured in jails. Judy in jails was quite a story. The second significant adventure was in India. When I was first asked to help make a woman's blouse by some friends, there was no western garment tailor or factory in all of India, with the exception of a San Francisco shirt works which made men's shirts. With two other women, we single-handedly started, birthed, and created the export garment business in India for western clothes. This industry today employs millions of men and women. I am particularly proud of having created employment for over ten thousand families in my own business. I found the moral of my work ethic at this time. When I was a social worker, I gave away three bicycles and two consultations, and believed I was helping the world. When I went into business and my goal was making money, I employed thousands of people. Employing women and doing business ethically was one of the most successful and fulfilling periods of my life.
