A JAPANESE KEYAKI POT HOOK, MEIJI PERIOD (1868-1912) - Massive solid keyaki wooden, so-called, Daikoku jizai 自在 (pot hook). Called that way after the shape of Daikoku’s hat. Daikokuten 大黒天 is a syncretic Japanese deity of fortune and wealth, one of the Seven gods of Fortune 七福神 (Shichifukujin). The hook ends elegantly in a small curve. These hooks were traditionally suspended from a sturdy beam above the sunken hearth using a rope. With an adjustable hook attached to is, to hold a kettle on the desired height over the hearth. Made of precious ‘Keyaki’ wood (Zelkova – Japanese oak) varnished in a warm reddish brown hue with a lively woodgrain. Dimensions: Height 51 cm, Width 57.5 cm, Depth 17-34 cm. Weight 25 kg. Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868-1912). In a very good original condition with some minor traces of use and small shrinkage cracks. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.
