A LARGE CHERRY WOOD AND IVORY OKIMONO, SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY - High quality, finely carved, large cherry wooden and ivory okimono 置物 in the shape of a hunter carrying a monkey. Tiptoeing across a tree trunk while he is trying to keep his balance. He has fastened his freshly caught prey by tying it to the tip of his long Tanegashima Teppo (rifle). The sculpture is made of solid cherry wood in a lovely warm brown shade, with a few pieces of inlaid ivory; head, hands, pouch and point of the gun. The entire sculpture is very finely carved with soft-features and many intrigue details. Dimensions: Height 32.4 cm, Width 36 cm, Depth 14 cm. Period: Japan – Early Meiji period (Second half 19th century). In a very good condition with an inconspicuous restoration at the back on his left foot. Please have a look at the photos for a clear condition reference. Provenance: From a private collection in Belgium. The okimono is included in the commissioned private catalogue, titled ‘The Nibajama collection’, item no. 219, page 110-112. This catalogue is also included with the purchase.
