A JAPANESE IMARI COVERD BOWL,ARITA, 17TH CENTURY
A finely crafted Japanese Imari porcelain covered bowl from the 17th century, featuring intricate polychrome decoration and gilding. The domed lid is adorned with vibrant floral motifs, including peonies, set against a deep cobalt-blue ground with swirling patterns and highlighted with gilded accents. The finial takes the form of a gilded lotus bud, adding an elegant touch.
The body of the bowl is decorated with alternating panels, each depicting traditional motifs. One panel showcases a spotted mythical creature, likely a karashishi (lion dog), amidst chrysanthemums and stylized foliage, while the other panels display detailed floral arrangements. The palette is dominated by Imari’s signature colors—iron red, cobalt blue, and gold.
