A CHINESE FAHUA-TYPE JAR, QING DYNASTY (1644–1911) - A Chinese thickly potted porcelain jar, decorated with design of cranes and lotus plants above crashing waves in turquoise, yellow and white on indigo ground. The design is outlined with raised fillets of clay (Fa Hua technique). These are in filled with enamel colours (sancai). Height: 50 cm Diameter at the mouth: 44 cm In this style of polychrome porcelain, transparent enamel glazes are painted with raised clay outlines on the white clay body in the same way as enamel pastes are put into the cells, or cloisons, of the metal-based cloisonné.
