TWO STYLISH JAPANESE TEMPLE CANDLESTICKS, 19TH CENTURY - A pair of tall, stylish temple candlesticks shokudai 燭台 coated with glossy black lacquer 蝋色漆 (rôiro’urushi) fitted with shaped metal appliques with a chiselled karakusa motif 唐草 (arabesque). These elegant candle stands were traditionally used in Japanese Buddhist temples. Each candlestick features a long fluted column rising from a chrysanthemum-shaped arched foot, surmounted by a smaller flower-head fitted with a copper candle pricket and a ring-shaped candle holder. Complete with the original wooden tomobako 供箱 (storage box), . Dimensions: Height 84 cm, Diameter 17.8 cm. In very good and nice original condition with some minor signs of age and use.
