Bidspirit auction | A LARGE CAMEO OF MEDUSA
A LARGE CAMEO OF MEDUSA MOUNTED IN A GOLD FRAME, 3RD CENTURY AD - A large agate cameo of medusa mounted in a contemporary frame. This is a very fine example of a common representation of medusa found universally in the Roman world as an amulet against evil. The head is usually shown slightly turned to the left as we see here. The gold frame is typical of the period with a chip carved motif, this is soldered to a band which encapsulates the stone. The back of the cameo is typically left chipped. 40 mm by 30 mm.
